Personage:

Niccolò Piccinino

Niccolò Piccinino, condottiere. Born in Perugia in 1380, died in 1444. Piccinino was a pupil of Braccio Da Montone in the art of war and was in command of the army of the Duke of Milano.

Artist:
Antonio Pisano (known as Pisanello) — Painter and Sculptor, 1395-1455.

He was born in Pisa, worked in Rimini, Venice, Naples, Ferrara and Mantova. Pisanello is considered ‘The Creator’ of the Renaissance medals.


Description:

Obverse: · NICOLAVS · PICININVSVICECOMES · MARCHIO · CAPITANEVS · MAX · AC · MARS · AER · Bust facing left, wearing tall cap with round crown and edge turned up all around and plate armour over shirt of mail.

Reverse: BRACCIVS_PISANI · POPVS · N · PICININVS. A she-griffin, wearing collar inscribed ‘PERVGIA’, stands facing left, wings raised, suckling two infants, Braccio da Montone and Piccinino.

Background:

Cast circa 1441, during P. permanence with the Duke of Milano.

Diameter:
91.5 mm. (Max. Diameter reported: 101 mm.). Bronze cast.
Evaluation:
Good condition; (Slightly different from Hill’s reproduction).
