Description:

Obverse: · ANTONIVS · GOZADINVS · Bust facing left, with long hair, wearing flat cap with back and front edges turned up, coat with lappets and chain over.

Reverse: An ‘S’ and a ‘B’on either side of a unicorn seated facing left with head reverted to right, foreleg raised atop the ‘S’.

Background:

c. 1500. Very coarse style. S B is supposed to be for ‘Senator Bononiensis’. According to Litta, the unicorn is a Bentivoglio device; Gozzadini was adopted into that family in 1487, but afterwards (about 1504) became hostile to it. This medal may commemorate his appointment as member of the Papal deputation for the Government of Bologna in Dec. 1506 (Sanuto, Diarii vi, 501).

He retained his seat under the Bentivoglio reaction in 1511 and was confirmed by Leo X in 1513.  Gozzadini died in 1515.
