Francesco I Sforza

Francesco I Sforza. IV Duke of Milano, born in 1401, became Duke of Milano in 1450 until he died in 1466.

Artist:
Antonio Pisano (known as Pisanello) — Painter and Sculptor, 1395-1455.

He was born in Pisa, worked in Rimini, Venice, Naples, Ferrara and Mantova. Pisanello is considered ‘The Creator’ of the Renaissance medals.

Bust to the left, wearing tall cap with round crown and edge turned up all around; plate-armour over shirt of mail.

Reverse: OPVS · PISANI · PICTORIS  around edge. Bust of horse facing left. At left three closed books along with a sword with pointing to the right.

Background:

Cast circa 1441, when Pisanello lived in Milano.
