Carlo Quirini, Venetian Noble, who lived in the second half of the 15th century.

Artist:
Sperandio of Mantova — Sculptor, Painter, Architect, Goldsmith (1435-1520).

The most prolific medallist of the 15th Century (48 medals), lived mostly in Ferrara; 5 years in Venice and 10 years in Bologna. Also worked in Milano, Faenza and Padova.


Description:

Obverse: · CAROLVS · QVIRINI · VENETI · Bust facing right, long curly hair, soft cap and coat with pleated front over doublet.

Reverse: · IN · IVSTE · EXTINGOR · Across the field OPVS / SPIRANDEI and in exergue: MCCCCLXXII. Scene: female figure wearing cloak fastened around neck, holding long torch in right hand.

Background:

Cast in 1472, before his Venetian Period (1498-1504). The Motto on reverse tells that Carlo died too young.

83.7 mm. Bronze cast.
Evaluation:
Good patina, moderate wear on the reverse (date text at bottom is obscured), Likely original cast.
